Artist Statement

For me, creating any piece is a collaboration between myself, the clay, and kiln. There comes a point in the process when you are no longer in control. The clay does not care that you want it to move a certain way. The glaze does not care that you don’t want it to run. The kiln most certainly does not care if it warps your piece. Nature itself is full of examples of this kind of impermanence - a tree that falls over a creek, creating a bridge, or the riverbed that shapes the land around it.

These imperfections owe their charm to the unpredictability of nature. As much as I’d like to have total control over every piece I make, I have come to accept that this desire is unrealistic. This is what makes each piece special and unique.
